Why a NEW Think and Grow Rich?
Well, I’ll be glad to tell you. There were two basic issues. One was that we just had to clean up a lot of what I call the creaking “isms” of an antique age. They were unintentional, of course, and fit for the times, but they needed to be updated to provide a modernization of this success classic.
The fact that the book was just loaded with sexism is the most obvious example. There was Americanism and racism in there, too. Basically, you had to be white, American, and male to be of any account in the book as originally written. Now, I happen to fit all those categories, but it bothers me as much as it bothers anybody else.
A lot of young people were just absolutely turned off, so we had to clean up all that. Sometimes it was as simple as modifying a language choice: instead of saying “and every man must…” you could just put “every man or woman must…” or “he or she” instead of “he.”
But it went much deeper than that. We found international examples, male and female examples, interracial examples, so the book is much more accessible to everybody. Everybody will just feel easier, because it’s a modern read.
